A car used only for short trips to the shops and school can wear faster than one that covers long motorway miles.

The problem is that the engine, exhaust, and battery rarely reach their ideal operating conditions.

Moisture and oil

Combustion produces water vapour. On short trips, the engine does not get hot enough to drive it off, so moisture and fuel can contaminate the oil. Over time this can form sludge.

Exhaust corrosion

Condensation collects in a cold exhaust and can cause it to rust from the inside. Longer drives heat the exhaust enough to evaporate it.

Battery drain

Starting the engine uses a lot of battery power, and short trips may not give the alternator enough time to recharge it fully.

Diesel particulate filters

Many diesel cars have a particulate filter that needs regular longer drives at sustained speed to clean itself. Mostly short-trip driving can clog it, leading to expensive repairs.

What to do

Combine errands into one longer trip where possible
Take a longer drive at steady speed every week or two
Follow the severe-service maintenance schedule
Consider whether walking, cycling, or an EV suits your short journeys
