Your nose can detect car problems before a warning light appears. Many smells are linked to specific faults.

Some are minor, but others — such as fuel smells — need immediate attention.

Sweet, syrupy smell

Often a coolant leak. Look for green, orange, or pink fluid under the car, and watch the temperature gauge. Coolant is toxic to pets and people, so clean up spills.

Burning oil

Oil leaking onto hot exhaust parts produces an acrid burning smell. Check the oil level and look for leaks around the engine.

Rotten eggs

A sulphur smell can point to a problem with the catalytic converter or fuel mixture. Have it diagnosed, as a failing catalytic converter can be expensive if left.

Petrol or diesel

A strong fuel smell outside of refuelling may indicate a leak in the fuel system. This is a fire risk — do not drive the car and have it inspected promptly.

Musty smell from vents

Mould or bacteria in the air-conditioning system can cause a musty odour. Replacing the cabin filter and having the system cleaned usually helps.
